Educational System
With the local government act of 1991, laws regarding local educational systems were established and became effective. Thus, there are minor differences in educational systems between regions. However, where the federal government has established certain standards, local school districts have built curriculums and designated teaching materials based on these standards. By providing some room for flexibility for each region, the educational system can be configured according to particular educational needs. The Korean educational system allows that all people evenly receive the opportunity to obtain essential and wide-ranging knowledge by receiving 16 straight years of education with a progression through, 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of middle school, 3 years of high school and 4 years of university. Universities provide further education with 2-3 years of master’s courses and additional 2-3 years of doctorate courses.
