Six Countries Including the U.S. Decide to Partici

According to Yonhap News,

The U.S., Israel, Norway and three other countries have decided to take part in 2012 Yeosu Expo, stoking expectations to lure more countries.

The organizing committee of 2012 Yeosu Expo said on August 2nd that six countries including the U.S. officially notified the Korean government of their participation.

The six countries are the U.S., Norway, Israel, Kenya, Congo, and the Marshall Islands. A total of 61 nations and three international organizations have decided to participate in 2012 Yeosu Expo.

The participation of the U.S., a nonmember of BIE, is on condition of securing participating funds and private partners, since the government has limitations in spending budgets for international expositions organized by BIE.

The organizing committee expect that America’s early decision to be involved in 2012 Yeosu Expo, though on condition of securing funds, will be very helpful in attracting other countries.

Also, it is expected that advanced countries in the marine industry such as Norway and Israel will contribute to a higher quality of the Expo.

An official of the organizing committee said “the U.S. notified its participation in Shanghai Expo six months before the opening despite repeated requests from the Chinese organizing committee,” and added “this time, the country has made the decision very quickly.”

The organizing committee thinks that the process to induce participation is very fast and predicts the goal of 70 participating countries can be comfortably achieved.

Yeosu Expo will be held in Yeosu new port from May 12th to August 12th in 2012, and aims to attract 100 countries and 8 million visitors (including 550,000 foreign visitors.)
