- Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs approved development plans on the 8th… To be completed by 2025 after an investment of KRW 1,500 billion on a site of approx. 9,000,000㎡ -

The Samho District development project to develop a coastal ‘tourism and leisure city’ in the southwestern region of Korea is fully underway. When completed in 2025 it will be the largest scale tourism and leisure type city in all of North East Asia.

The Jeonnam Provincial Office announced on the 5th that the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs approved the ‘Yeongam and Haenam tourism and leisure enterprise city (Samho District) development zone designation and development plans’ jointly proposed by Seonam Coastal Leisure Co., Ltd. and the Jeonnam Provincial Office.

Seonam Coastal Leisure, the project developer, will spearhead development in cooperation with Ace Golf, the Korea Tourism Organization and the Jeonnam Provincial Office. The team will establish appropriation and real estate compensation plans within the year to commence stage 1 construction during the first half of next year.

With an investment of KRW 1,556.7 billion on a site of 9,196,000㎡ around Nanjeong-ri, Samho-eup of Yeongam, the tourism facility site (35.5%), public facility site (33.9%), industrial facility site (9.5%), residential site (7.9%), holding site (7.5%), accommodation facility site (3.3%), commercial operation facility site (1.1%) and supporting and other facility sites (1.3%), will all be constructed by 2025. In particular, 28% of the overall area will be developed as parkland and green zone in order to realize eco-friendly development.

With a residential population of about 10,000, the project will be developed as a self-sufficient enterprise city comprising diverse industries such as tourism, leisure, culture, residential, manufacturing and education.

As for the direction of development, this project aims to jump start the local economy and contribute to balanced national development. A policy has been set out to develop this area into a large-scale recreational city with cultural, sports and health facilities that is also green and energy efficient using zero-carbon solar energy.

In addition, protect the natural environment of the adjacent Yeongam Lake, the distance from the lake will be secured as much as possible to preserve the natural habitat of local flora and fauna.

The green zones of the city, such as the central park, waterside park and ecological streams, have been planned to connect with each other. Also, it has been planned to provide a space whereby residents may enjoy the natural environment based on the existing green zone and water system preservation plans.

During the construction period, economic side benefits will accrue nearly KRW 3,900 billion. This project will also create 40,000 jobs while inducing an income of KRW 800 billion and additional values of KRW 1,600 billion.

The Samho District with its mild climate (annual average temperature of 15℃ or higher) is an ideal location to enjoy leisure sports throughout the year. With the Muan International Airport, Mokpo International Passenger Ship Terminal, Seohaean Expressway and KTX Honam Line, etc., the Samho District is easily reachable from anywhere in the county and therefore has the optimal conditions as a tourism and leisure city.
