GS Caltex finishes fuel plant in Yeosu

GS Caltex Co., Korea’s second-largest refinery, said yesterday it has completed a plant that converts heavy oil into transportation fuels such as gasoline in Yeosu, South Jeolla.
GS Caltex will start mass production at the plant with a daily heavy-oil processing capacity of 60,000 barrels from September, the company said.
The company said it has spent 2.6 trillion won ($2.2 billion) since October 2008 in order to build the plant.
The completion of the plant will increase the daily heavy-oil processing capacity of GS Caltex to 215,000 barrels from the current 155,000 barrels, according to the company. This is the first time in Korea that such a facility is being constructed, and the seventh in the world to be operated, GS Caltex said.
Unlisted GS Caltex is a 50-50 joint venture between GS Holdings Corp. of Korea and Chevron Corp., the second-largest U.S. oil company.
