A delegation from Denmark, one of the world's leaders in wind power penetration rate and industrial competitiveness, visited Jeollanam-do Province to express strong interest in the Province's vigorously promoted 30GW offshore wind power project and explore ways for mutual growth.

Jeollanam-do Province, the Danish Embassy in Korea and the Jeonnam Wind Power Industry Association have co-hosted the 'Jeollanam-do - Denmark Offshore Wind Power Cooperation Forum' and discussed cooperation plans for offshore wind power development and industrial ecosystem construction for seven days in the wangin hall of the provincial government office.

The forum was attended by about 80 people, including former Kim Young-rok (Jeollanam-do Province Governor), Sabrina Meersohn Meinecke (Deputy Head of Mission of the Danish Embassy in Korea), Jang Chung-mo (Chairman of the Korea Wind Power Industry Association), and Einer Jensen (CIP Global Head of External Cooperation). Eighteen Danish offshore wind companies and twenty-two domestic offshore wind companies and organizations also attended.

The event began with introductions of the Danish offshore wind delegation companies, including an engineering services company for wind farm development (Windpal), a certification consulting company for offshore wind farms (DNV), a maintenance and management company for offshore wind turbines (HAWE Energy solutions) and the event then proceeded with presentations on the following topics ▲Jeollanam-do Offshore Wind Power Project Development Stage ▲History, Future, and Implications of the Danish Offshore Wind Industry ▲SK E&S Offshore Wind Project Development Status

The event continued with a heated discussion on the topic of 'Building an Offshore Wind Power Ecosystem and Cooperation Strategies.' The discussion was moderated by Professor Lee Sang-chan of Mokpo National University and included Kim Byung-yun (Vice President of Vestas Korea, including five Danish experts), and Kim Jang-hwan (Secretary General of the Jeollanam-do Wind Power Industry Association, including four Korean experts).

In his opening remarks, Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized that after visiting the Esbjerg Port, a dedicated offshore wind port in Denmark in 2020, he drew a concrete blueprint for offshore wind power in Jeollanam-do Province. He stated that based on the inspiration, knowledge, and experience gained from Denmark, a total of 30GW of offshore wind power projects, including the world's largest 8.2GW Shinan offshore wind farm that began construction last year in Yeosu and Yeonggwang, is now in full swing in Jeollanam-do Province.

The Governor also stated that the plan is to build a value chain by clustering offshore wind-related companies in Mokpo New Port and Haenam Hwawon Industrial Complex, where the world's No. 1 wind turbine company Vestas will build its turbine factory. He also said that the plan is to make Jeollanam-do Province a hub and outpost for the Northeast Asian offshore wind power industry by fostering specialized offshore wind power personnel centered on Mokpo and Sinan, which have been designated as educational development special zones. He added that he hopes for cooperation between domestic offshore wind power developers and related companies and Danish companies to achieve mutual growth.

After the forum, the Danish offshore wind delegation visited Mokpo New Port, where Vestas will build its turbine factory, and Haenam Hwawon Industrial Complex, which is developing an offshore wind power support complex. They discussed ways to cooperate on offshore wind power and regional development.

The visit of the Danish offshore wind delegation to Jeollanam-do Province last year, following the Norwegian business delegation in October and the Danish Energy Agency and Energinet officials in November, can be interpreted as a sign that European companies are paying attention to Jeollanam-do Province as a hub for their entry into Asia-Pacific and a global offshore wind hub.
