Suncheonman International Garden Expo Begins Its Seven-Month Journey

The Suncheonman International Garden Expo 2023 began its seven-month-long journey on March 31, as it kicked off with a splendid opening ceremony on the special stage on the water, "Garden on the Water," located in Dongcheon, Suncheon, where spring flowers were in full bloom.
The opening ceremony was attended by President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee, ministers and vice ministers from central government ministries, ruling and opposition party lawmakers, and local government officials. After the opening remarks by Suncheon Mayor Noh Gwan Gyu, a welcome speech by Kim Yeong Rok, the governor of Jeollanam-do province, and a congratulatory speech by President Yoon Suk Yeol, a celebratory performance was held.
In his opening remarks, Mayor Noh Gwan Gyu expressed his gratitude to the citizens and staff of Suncheon, who did their best to create a new landmark in Korea, saying, "As gardens represent the essence of science, technology, and culture of that time, this expo will set the standard for the future city."
Governor Kim Yeong Rok welcomed the attendees through his welcome speech, saying, "Welcome to Suncheon, the world's greatest garden city that will showcase the charm of surpassing imagination and satisfying all senses." He also expressed his commitment to developing the South Coast Marine Tourism Belt, centered around the Suncheon Bay National Garden and the UNESCO-listed tidal flat.
President Yoon Suk Yeol praised Suncheon in his congratulatory speech, saying, "Suncheon has transformed into an eco-city and garden city, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations." He also noted that "Suncheon is a city that aligns with the philosophy of balanced regional development, where the local government finds growth engines on its own and the central government supports them."
"The development of Honam is the development of the Republic of Korea, and the prosperity of Korea is the prosperity of Honam,” he promised. He further said, "The development of Honam is the development of Korea, and the success of Korea is the success of Honam." "We will make sure that Suncheon becomes a key hub for the development of Honam and Korea."
The Suncheonman International Garden Expo 2023 will take place for seven months until October 31 under the theme of "Living in the Garden," held at the Suncheonma International Garden, the Suncheonman Wetland Reserve, and the downtown area of Suncheon.
With a goal of attracting 8 million visitors, the expo will showcase various garden cultures from 14 countries and 17 cities, including Japan, the Netherlands, and Spain. It will also offer various attractions such as Green Island, the first road garden in Korea, and the Ocheon Green Square, which has been transformed from a reservoir into a green grass park.
There are also various programs such as Garden Stay, which provides a special one-night stay in the garden; Eosing-gil, where you can feel the breath of nature with your bare feet; and Garden Dream Boat, which goes back and forth on the National Garden Waterway.
President Yoon Suk Yeol had a meeting with residents, including young people and businesspeople in Jeollanam-do province, at the Garden Stay inside the garden exhibition venue after the opening ceremony and took time to listen to local issues.
At the meeting, there were discussions and responses to suggestions from Jeollanam-do residents, including the establishment of a national industrial complex for advanced materials and the importance of local river water management.
