South Jeolla Province offers distinguished talents an opportunity for international studies [Youth Development Division] 286-3420
- The 2nd Provincial Scholarship Program offers up to KRW 100 million for master’s and doctoral programs. -
South Jeolla Province has issued an open contest for the “2nd Provincial Scholarship Program,” a part of their 7th Civil Election Cycle brand policy “Talent Development Project for the New Millennium” that offers the region’s distinguished talents a chance for overseas studies.
The Provincial Scholarship Program was created to support students in South Jeolla Province who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields by providing them with opportunities for creating a cosmopolitan perspective through overseas studies.
The program’s second term selects up to 3 students engaged in master’s and doctoral studies for education in overseas universities, offering up to KRW 100 million per person depending on their length of stay and the country.
Any citizen of the Republic of Korea residing in South Jeolla Province and has graduated (or will graduate) from at least one elementary, middle, or high school or university in the province upon the posting date can apply for the program. There are no limitations in majors, from blue economy, engineering, humanities, and social sciences to natural sciences.
The application period runs until March 31, 2021. Applications can be made through the website of the Jeollanamdo Institute for Talent & Lifelong Education (www.jntle.kr), and the results will be released at the end of April. In particular, among individuals slated to graduate this year in a regional university, those with financial difficulties will be prioritized in the program.
Applicants will be screened through a three-stage review featuring document processing and an in-depth interview presided by university professors and experts. The review will consider not only the candidate’s expertise and potential in his/her field of choice but also his/her will toward community service and leadership potential.
Last year, South Jeolla Province has provided scholarships to three students, including Kang Ri-hyun (Economics, University of California), who worked multiple jobs to augment the received scholarship, and Kim Jong-chan (Data Engineering, Georgetown University), a student who, despite financial difficulties, also managed an educational volunteer organization alongside regular studies. All three scholars now study in the United States and have engaged proactively with various online community services on top of their studies. Provincial authorities are also planning to establish a database for the management of these scholars.
Son Jeong-sik, the head of the Self-Governing Administration Bureau of the South Jeolla Province, commented that “the scholarship program is part of our efforts to rebuild the ladder of hope for the region’s talents” and “we hope to see many individuals with dreams and passion taking part in the program.”
The Talent Development Project for the New Millennium provided support to 1,163 scholars despite the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the Provincial Scholarship Program is the first among many programs planned for 2021.
