On February 9, 2021, the South Jeolla Provincial Office commemorated the first cargo vessel departure to the United States with the hope of reaching its USD 5 million sales goal.

South Jeolla brands in Amazon, an American online shopping service, include 63 products from 27 companies. The cargo vessel transports a collection of 23 products from 14 companies, amounting to USD 246,000 in total value.

In particular, the cargo is notable for containing processed abalone and organic laver, sales of which have been skyrocketing since their entry in January this year, amounting to USD 26,000 and USD 30,000, respectively.

Since July last year, South Jeolla Province has developed 12 specialized products for the US market out of the province’s 7 “star” agricultural and fisheries products. These have debuted in the American market last January to great acclaim. Seasoned laver products from Sinan County’s Hyeongje Fisheries, in particular, became an Amazon bestseller only three weeks after their introduction.

The seven “star” products consist of ▲ dried seafood snacks produced by Araum in Yeosu City; ▲ fermented sauces made by Maeil Foods in Suncheon City; ▲ plum syrup crafted by Daap Maeyul Agricultural Cooperative in Gwangyang City; ▲ organic citron drink created by Eden Foods Agricultural Cooperative in Goheung County; ▲ dried sweet potatoes crafted by Haenam Sweet Potato Foods in Haenam County; ▲ processed abalone made by JS Korea in Wando County; and ▲ organic laver developed by Hyeongje Fisheries Cooperative in Sinan County.

Abalone is one of the most acclaimed products of South Jeolla, making up 98.4% of Korea’s local production and recognized for excellence in Chinese and Southeast Asian markets. However, conventional distribution schemes have relied on fresh products, limiting their reach in the American market.

In contrast, JS Korea’s abalone products are canned for easy transportation and handling and commended by American consumers.

One product review in Amazon reads, “It’s wonderful that I have access to very fresh Korean abalone and their proven taste and quality in a convenient way.”

International Cooperation Officer Lee Sang-jin of South Jeolla Provincial Office commented, “We plan to establish South Jeolla brands in Amazon services in 3 other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, and add more than 50 products to the catalog so that we can reach our goal of USD 5 million in exports.” He added that “we will also work to provide proactive marketing that can enhance the recognition and competitiveness of brand products to overseas consumers.”

South Jeolla Province plans to allocate an additional budget of KRW 600 million to stabilize the Amazon South Jeolla brand, in support of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) registration of South Jeolla companies, marketing, export basis, and star product promotion. The brand’s success is also expected to be developed into the leading model of overseas online platforms for Korea’s regional authorities.
