World Scholars Discuss Blue Economy at Yeosu Expo

Writer administ Posted at 2009-12-30
Globally acclaimed scholars in the marine, environment and energy sectors gathered to explore ways to achieve “Green Growth for the Blue Economy” through better use and preservation of the oceans.
The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea held the Third International Symposium under the theme, “Core Agenda for Yeosu Expo,” on November 19 at the Lotte Hotel, Jeju. Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Presidential Committee on Green Growth, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and Jeju National University have co-hosted the symposium.

Among the symposium's 250 participants were James M. Turner, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Affairs, United States Department of Commerce; Vicente Loscertales, Secretary General of the BIE; Patricio A. Bernal, Executive Secretary of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO; Willett Kempton, President of the Carbon-Free Energy Research Center at the University of Delaware; and other Korean and international experts in the marine, energy and environmental areas, as well as students and the general public.

The program was organized in three sessions: “The Green Growth Model Proposed by Yeosu Expo,” “Yeosu Expo's Mandate: Ocean & Coast Best Practices, Yeosu Declaration and Yeosu Project,” and a special session dedicated to “The Blue Economy.”

In his keynote speech, James M. Turner noted that the Obama administration is well aware of the threats to sea and their effects, and explained about the scientific research and policies being carried out by the government.

Patricio A. Bernal delivered the keynote lecture highlighting the role of coastal ecosystem in purifying the increase in carbon, and stressed the need to preserve coastal ecosystems by nurturing and developing coastal ecosystem managers.

Especially, Sun Liansheng, Director for the UBPA (Urban Best Practice Area) of the Expo 2010 Shanghai China, gave an informative presentation on specific visions for marine preservation and management by the international community.

This International Symposium in Jeju follows the First and the Second Symposium held in Yeosu and Seoul respectively and is expected to kick start the touring host in the South Coast sun-belt zone. The Organizing Committee plans to host academic forums at least twice a year to develop the theme of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, and collect worldwide opinions to create an international consensus for the Yeosu Declaration and the Yeosu Project.
