South Jeolla Province to Develop Southwestern Free

Writer administ Posted at 2009-12-08
According to Yonhap News,
The South Jeolla provincial government is pushing for a plan to develop a free economic zone that will integrate five southwestern cities and counties in the southwestern part of Korea.

The provincial government announced on December 6 that it will submit an application to the Ministry of Knowledge for approval and designation of a southwestern FEZ in South Jeolla province on December 11.

The candidate site covers a 87.49㎢ area in Mokpo city, Gangjin, Haenam, Jindo, and Shinan county. The South Jeolla government will develop the area as a center of maritime logistics and green growth industries including tourism, wind power, and green businesses.

Other than South Jeolla, Ulsan, Gyeonggi, North Chungcheong, Gangwon also made a bid for a FEZ, hinting at a cut-throat competition.

The South Jeolla provincial government held a seminar on the FEZ development plan in September, and solicited ideas from residents in October and November.

A South Jeolla government said, “It is imperative to designate an FEZ in this area to boost economic exchanges with China and fast-emerging Northeast Asian economy."
