Governor Kim claims, "We will make KEPCO Tech into a global, energy-specializing university"
-"Welcome to establish in Naju Bitgaram-dong…We will grow together in cooperation with Gwangju City"-

"We will work with Gwangju city and KEPCO to nurture KEPCO Tech as a world-renowned institute of energy specialization" said Kim Young-rok, the governor of Jeollanam-do Province on the 28th.

"We welcome the establishment of KEPCO Tech in Naju Bitgaram-dong with 2 million citizens and express our condolences and gratitude to the city and its citizens, who have competed in good faith," Kim told reporters at a press conference in the afternoon.

Kim said, "Jeollanam-do and Gwangju City originated from a single root and share economic communities." "With this decision, we will strengthen our win-win development with Gwangju to achieve a mutual growth."

"The confirmed site of KEPCO University is located near Naju's co-innovation city and is the best place for co-prosperity development in Gwangju," he said. "When KEPCO is established and operated in earnest, the achievement of revitalizing innovative cities will be enjoyed not only in Jeonnam but also in Gwangju City, and especially in various areas such as energy and new industries."

"If KEPCO Tech is established in Jeollanam-do Province, where there has been no research-oriented universities, it will be a new opportunity to promote cooperation, including joint researches with universities in the area, such as Mokpo National University and Suncheon University, as well as GIST and Chonnam National University in Gwangju, which are much closer in distance" Kim said.

Regarding the vision of KEPCO, Mr. Kim said, "We will build an 'energy industrial complex' centered on KEPCO University. Companies in Naju Innovative Industrial Complex and Kwangju City's high-tech industrial complex of this new Energy Valley will enjoy KEPCO`s outstanding research achievements. We will actively attract energy-related conglomerates to the energy valley in collaboration with Gwangju City and KEPCO."

He further emphasized, "We will make Gwangju-Jeonnam Joint Innovation City become the mecca of Korea's new energy industries by making KEPCO Tech a world-class technology institute specializing in the new energy industry"

The governor also said, "We will do our utmost to establish KEPCO University as originally planned to open in March 2022" and added, "We will designate the land and its surrounding areas as land transaction licensing zones to prevent real estate speculation, and by promptly launching a support team for the establishment of KEPCO, we will swiftly proceed to revise the land transfer, land compensation, and related laws."

Kim in response to the concerns of excessive financial support from local government said, "Although local government will contribute a certain amount to the establishment of KEPCO University, it will not end up as a unilateral contribution. As KEPCO will also consider how it will contribute to the community, we will continue to maintain a win-win relationship."
