- Secretariat opened in Gwangju on the 19th… First committee meeting to discuss efficient promotion measures -

Promoted for mutual development of 3 regions, Jeollanam-do, Gwangju and Jeollabuk-do, the Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Project, with an investment to the scale of KRW 161 trillion in 7 fields, such as widening of local areas and specialization projects, has entered the main phases of development.

On the 19th, the Jeonnam Provincial Office held a ceremony for opening of the Secretariat at the Gwangju Techno Park. In the afternoon, the Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Development Committee held the first meeting and discussed ideas to establish metropolitan development plans for the 3 regions in the Honam area and to efficiently promote the collaborative project.

Installed in accordance with the Special Act for Balanced National Development, the Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Development Committee is an organization that promotes the joint project of Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do and Gwangju-si in line with the government’s 5+2 metropolitan economic zone policy. With the mayor and governors of these regions as joint chairpersons, this committee consists of 15 members including economic experts of municipal and provincial councils recommended by the municipal and provincial offices as well as the Local Development Committee.

In the first meeting, the Committee deliberated and resolved the operation rules necessary for operating the Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Development Committee.

Following this meeting, the ceremony for opening of the Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Development Committee Secretariat was held at the Gwangju Techno Park with attendance by Chairperson Choi Sang-cheol of the Local Development Committee, Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Development Committee members, such as Governor Park Jun-yeong of the Jeonnam Provincial Office, Mayor Park Gwang-tae of Gwangju City, and Governor Kim Wan-ju of the Jeonbuk Provincial Office, the Director of the Municipal and Provincial Development Research Center and Director of Honam Leading Industry Support Team, etc. The seat of the Secretariat will rotate every two years among the 3 regions.

The Secretariat consists of 2 departments with 13 members. Two public officers were sent from each of the three regions. The Secretary-General and administrative assistants were filled by open recruiting. The Secretariat will supervise the overall affairs of the project promotion, such as by establishing metropolitan plans as well as discovering, managing and assessing linked collaborative projects.

Director Bae Jae-gwon of the Metropolitan Economic Zone Planning Team said, “With the Secretariat opened, the Committee operation commences in full scale.” He added, “We will establish metropolitan plans, discover linked collaborative projects and share financial resources, resolve project management and evaluations within the economic zones concerned, and build cooperative local development strategies to surpass the administrative zones. Through these efforts, we will be able to accelerate promotion of the specialized local development.”

The Honam metropolitan economic zone development plans established by the Honam Metropolitan Economic Zone Development Committee focus of 7 fields with a project cost of KRW 161,365.2 billion.

Per each field, KRW 205.4 billion will be invested for development of leading industries, KRW 1,619 billion for development of strategic industries, KRW 525.9 billion for personnel development and promotion of science and technology, KRW 93,494.3 billion for development of foundational infrastructure, KRW 46,777.3 billion for expansion of traffic and distribution networks, KRW 5,403.2 billion for development of culture and tourism and resources, and KRW 13,341.1 billion for collaboration among metropolitan economic zones.
