Governor of Jeollanam-do Kim Young-rok signed an investment agreement (MOA) with Vestas Wind Systems A/S, A.P Moller-Maersk A/S, and Mokpo City for the establishment of Mokpo New Port, an offshore wind turbine factory, in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the 22nd (local time).

According to the agreement, Vestas and Maersk will jointly invest about 300 billion won to build a facility capable of producing up to 150 units per year in 200,000㎡ (approximately 60,000 Square Feet) of the Mokpo New Port port hinterland. The target is mass production starting in 2027.

In addition, Vestas plans to contribute to the local production of parts and the establishment of an offshore wind power industry ecosystem through research and development cooperation with domestic offshore wind power-related parts companies.

Maersk agreed to make efforts to revitalize Mokpo New Port by creating new cargo volume.

Governor Kim Young-rok said, “This joint investment between Vestas, the world’s No.1 turbine company, and Maersk, a world-class integrated logistics company, has more meaning than simply attracting a turbine factory to Jeollanam-do.”

In particular, “the hosting of a turbine factory, a core component of offshore wind power generators, in Jeollanam-do will enable Jeonnam to advance beyond Korea and become a forward base for offshore wind power exports in the Asia · Pacific region through the integration of parts companies such as bearings and transformers and partner companies such as towers, substructures, and cables.” “It will be a strong stepping stone,” he emphasized.

He added, “Maersk’s investment in Mokpo New Port will serve as an opportunity to become a bridgehead for aviation and shipping logistics centers centered on Muan Airport · Mokpo New Port,” adding, “We will make more efforts to foster new industries in the southwestern region.”

Governor Kim Young-rok expressed his gratitude to Vestas Global Chief Operating Officer Tommy Rahbek Nielsen and Maersk Global CEO Vincent Clerc for this investment decision, and said, “We will actively provide administrative and financial support to ensure that Vestas’ turbine plant is established as planned.” .

As Jeonnam Province pursues the attraction of the Vestas turbine plant through this investment agreement, it is stepping up its efforts to attract component companies such as bearings and transformers and related companies such as towers, substructures, and cables to create an offshore wind power industrial cluster linking Mokpo New Port and Haenam Hwawon Industrial Complex. We plan to strengthen it.

In addition, in cooperation with local universities such as Mokpo National University, we plan to train the 200 skilled workers needed to operate the Vestas turbine factory and the professional manpower needed for turbine maintenance without any disruption.
