The Jeollanam-do Ocean & Fisheries Science Institute announced that Governor of Jeollanam-do Kim Yeong-rok was selected as the 1st Honorary New Knowledge Worker for Maritime and Fisheries by the Korean Federation of Maritime and Fisheries New Knowledge Worker at the ceremony of the 6th Maritime and Fisheries Talent Fostering Day held at The Ocean Park in Yeosu on the 29th.

Governor Kim Yeong-rok was honored as an Honorary New Knowledge Worker for Maritime and Fisheries, for the first time as head of local government in Korea, in recognition of his contribution to the development of the Korean fishery industry and the discovery of the largest number of new maritime and fisheries intellectuals.

Governor Kim said, “In my childhood, my family was also engaged in seaweed farming, so I understand the circumstances of fishermen well. We will continue to do our best to improve the settlement conditions in fishing villages and support the welfare of fishermen.”

About 500 people attended the ceremony, including Governor Kim Yeong-rok and Head of the Fisheries Policy Office of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Lee Gyeong-gyu. Certificates were awarded to Kim Yun-hee from Yeonggwang-gun and Ji Young-taek from Wando-gun, who were selected as the New Knowledge Workers of Korea. Also, awards were given to those of merit, and the 9th New Knowledge Worker Scholarship holders were selected.

Kim Yun-hee succeeded in standardization by restoring the traditional manufacturing process of dried yellow croaker in Beopseongpo and produced barcodes for dried yellow croaker made of polypropylene (pp) that are easy to recycle to facilitate the seafood traceability system. She contributed to vitalization of the tracking system and increased the competitiveness of the fishery industry with creative ideas. Ji Young-taek was also selected as a New Knowledge Worker by successfully producing the world's first internationally certified (ASC-MSC) hijiki using artificial seeds.

Governor Kim Yeong-rok said, “I am grateful for the enthusiasm of new knowledge workers in marine and fisheries who have worked hard to develop the fishery industry in Jeollanam-do.”
