Yeosu to Host JCOMM Congress in 2012

Writer administ Posted at 2009-11-23
According to Yonhap News,
The city of Yeosu in South Jeolla Province was designated as the venue for the fourth Joint WMO-IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) Congress.

The South Jeolla provincial government announced on November 11 that the commission of 182 member countries selected Yeosu as the host city of the fourth JCOMM congress. The congress, which takes place every four years, was originally planned to be held in 2013.

However, the South Jeolla Province persuaded members to hold the convention in 2012, which is the year of Yeosu expo. Consequently, the fourth congress will run from May 23 to May 31 in 2012 during the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.

Many are raising expectations for over 100 countries to take part in the next congress, up from about 40 countries in the last three rounds. The government also expects the two events would create synergies.

The provincial government made the last ditch effort to pitch the city as the venue for the congress by dispatching a team of delegates including Governor Park Jun-young in the third JCOMM congress held in November 4. Governor Park said, “The theme of the Yeosu expo, 'The Living Ocean and Coast,' is in line with the vision of JCOMM. As such, the hosting of the next JCOMM congress in Yeosu, which puts priority on global climate change, takes on great significance."

JCOMM Congress started out as a convention of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) since 1952. The organization later changed its name to the Commission for Marine Meteorology (CMM) in 1997 and to the World Meteorological Organization and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in 2001.
